Technical Data
817M40 is a high quality, high tensile, alloy steel . Usually supplied readily machineable as 817M40T. With chromium and molybdenum helping increase the hardenability of 817M40 and the nickel content increasing the toughness and resistance to impact of 817M40. When supplied as 817M40T it combines high tensile strength, shock resistance, good ductility and resistance to wear.
817M40 is available from stock in round bar and plate, which can be cut to suit your requirements.

Hardening:
Heat the 817M40 component uniformly to 823/850°C until heated through. Quench in oil.
Tempering:
Heat uniformly and thoroughly at the selected tempering temperature, up to 660°C and hold at heat for two hours per inch of
total thickness. Tempering between 250-375°C in not recommended for 817M40 as this can seriously reduce the steels
impact value.
Stress Relieving:
Heat slowly to 650-670°C, soak the 817M40 tool well before cooling in a furnace or in air.
