High speed steel suppliers and stockholders. High speed steel grades are available in rounds and flats with delivery to the whole of the UK.

As high performance steels high speed grades offer high hardness at temperatures up to 500°C and high wear resistance. High speed steel has more advantages to the standard high carbon tool steel specifications. It will withstand increases in temperature without losing its temper and this enables the steel to cut faster than high carbon steel. Hence the name high speed steel. Stocks are held in the tungsten molybdenum type high speed steel. Cobalt molybdenum high speed steel grades are also available, which offer high hardness, excellent cutting properties with high red hardness and good toughness.

Form of Supply

West Yorkshire Steel are stockholders and suppliers of round bar, flat bar, plate and block. Diameters can be sawn to your required lengths as one offs or multiple cut pieces. Rectangular pieces can be sawn from flat bar or block to your specific sizes. Ground high speed steel bar can be supplied, providing a quality precision finished bar to your required tolerances.

Applications

High speed steel (or HSS) is often used in the manufacture of machine bits such as taps, dies, twist drills, reamers, saw blades, drill bits and other cutting tools.

High speed steel specifications are held in International Standards including BS4659, BS EN ISO 4957, AISI, Werkstoff Nr and DIN designations. High speed steels are through hardening steels which are commonly supplied fully annealed ideally suited to be heat treated to a high Rockwell hardness. High Speed Steel specifications are high performance special steel grades offering high hardness at temperatures up to 500°C and high wear resistance.

High speed steel tool bits are supplied in flats, squares and rounds. Commonly supplied in standards sizes in grades M2 and M42. Non standard sizes can be produced within a few weeks, subject to availability of suitable raw material.

When hardening high speed steel consideration should be give to heat treatment temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times which will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each component. Other considerations during the heat treatment process include the type of furnace, quenching medium and work piece transfer facilities. Please consult your heat treatment provider for full guidance on heat treatment of high speed steel.
