EN42 Spring Steel


EN42 spring steel stockholders and suppliers. EN42 is a 0.70% carbon spring steel grade supplied in sheet, plate and strip with delivery to the whole of the UK. Available as annealed sheet or hardened and tempered spring steel strip it is supplied to specification conforming to BS970 designation. EN42 strip is supplied in coils and can be cut to your requirements. This is a carbon spring steel grade with an average carbon content of 0.70%. It is common for EN42 steel strip to be supplied with a polished finish; which is achieved by fine grinding, abrasive brushing or other similar processes. With this polished finish the strip is available with dressed edges or sheared edges slit to your required width. For spring applications it is recommended that the steel is used in the hardened and tempered condition. EN42 annealed is available in sheet, plate and strip.

Applications

EN42 is suitable for a wide variety of spring applications including flat springs, clutches, knives, doctor blades, saw blades, agricultural tools, wood cutting saws, shims, knives, blades, shims, washers, masonry tools.


Carbon 0.70-0.80% Phosphorous 0.05% max
Manganese 0.55-0.75% Sulphur 0.05% max
Silicon 0.10-0.40%

When heat treating EN42 temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times etc. will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each component. Other considerations during the heat treatment process include the type of furnace, quenching medium and work piece transfer facilities. Please consult your heat treatment provider for full guidance on heat treatment of spring steels.
