From Modest Beginnings

Harry Brearley came from a modest background and left school at an early age. Despite limited formal education, he developed a deep interest in metals and chemistry, working his way up through Sheffield’s steel industry by learning on the job and studying independently. His practical mindset and willingness to experiment would prove to be crucial.

The Birth of Stainless Steel

In 1913, Brearley was tasked with developing a new type of steel for gun barrels that would better resist erosion from heat and friction. While experimenting with different alloys, he added chromium to steel — something others had tried before — but Brearley noticed something unusual. Some discarded test samples refused to rust, even when left exposed to the elements.

Where others might have overlooked this detail, Brearley paid attention. He realised that the chromium formed a thin, invisible protective layer on the steel’s surface, preventing corrosion. This was the breakthrough: a steel resistant to rust and staining. Stainless steel had been born.

At first, the discovery struggled to find acceptance. Traditional steelmakers were sceptical, and early applications were limited. But Brearley soon recognised its potential for everyday use, particularly in cutlery, where hygiene and corrosion resistance were essential.

A Little-Known Fact

Before stainless steel, Brearley had already built a strong reputation working with tool steels, studying how different alloys affected hardness and performance. This hands-on experience — particularly with chromium steels — helped him recognise the unusual corrosion resistance that others might have missed.
